The Master Degree in Materials and Nanotechnology aims at providing students with highly cross-disciplinary competence and skills in the challenging area of advanced materials and emerging technologies for a broad array of applications.
To this aim, courses are offered in a synergetic collaboration between Departments of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa, and Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS), a highly reputed academic institution located in Pisa.
Students can choose a track (Piano di Studi) out of three options:
- Advanced Materials, mostly oriented towards preparation, characterization and use of advanced materials in industrial and research contexts;
- Biomaterials, mostly oriented towards the development of bio-compatible and bio-based materials, to be employed in life science applications;
- Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, mostly oriented towards design, fabrication, and study of nanostructured materials and related technologies for electronics and photonics.

Students are required to take two years of courses and research work, for a total of 120 ECTS credits. The final thesis required for graduation can be carried out either at the University of Pisa or at an external institution, including the full array of specialized research labs operated by national agencies (CNR, IIT, SNS) in Pisa, or an industry.
ADMISSION
Enrollment is limited to 35 positions, including up to 10 students educated outside EU and up to 5 students of Scuola Normale Superiore.
Pre-requisites for the admission are:
- A three-year degree in Industrial Engineering, Chemical Science and Technology, Physics, Information and Communication Technology (corresponding to Classi di Laurea L-9, L-27, L-30, L-8, respectively, in the Italian system)
- Or another three-year degree obtained abroad and recognized as valid for the admission.
Moreover, an adequate knowledge of the English language (at least at the B1 level) is required since classes are held in English.
SELECTION PROCEDURE
Selection of candidates is accomplished through a public competition. Calls will be published at the University web page.
The competition is based on an interview and on the evaluation of the candidate's curriculum.
For the academic year 2023/24 there will be two selection sessions, one reserved to students outside the European Union and not residing in Italy (non-EU applicants), to be held by Spring 2023, and another one open also to EU applicants, to be held in Summer 2023. Admitted candidates must have fulfilled their three-year degree by July 2023 (non-EU applicants) or December 2023 (EU applicants).
SCOLARSHIPS
The University of Pisa is offering 24 scholarships to the best 24 international students, who will enroll for the academic year 2023/24 in degree programs taught in English. The scholarships will be awarded by evaluating the interview, the curriculum, and the country of origin of the applicant, giving priority to less economically advantaged countries.
