Admission is allowed to a maximum of 35 students per academic year, including a maximum of 10 students educated outside Europe (EU) and not already residing in Italy, and a maximum of 6 students internal to Scuola Normale Superiore.
An official selection procedure is yearly managed by University of Pisa, with two distinct sections for non-EU and EU candidates.
The call for admission to the selection procedure ("bando") is available here. Presently:
- the selection procedure for non-EU candidates, not already residing in Italy (intake 2026/27), is closed;
- the selection procedure is open only to EU candidates and non-EU canidates already residing in Italy, with a deadline on August 30, 2026.
Selected candidates typically have a BSc in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and related disciplines. Selection is carried out by an appointed Selection Committee via a two-step procedure:
- the first step, based on the analysis of the curriculum vitae, the transcript of records, and other required documents, aims at verifying the minimal curricular requirements and at defining the list of candidates admitted to the interview and their rank;
- the second step, based on an interview, aims at verifying the personal preparation of the candidates, as well as their motivations and goals.
