Admission is allowed to a maximum of 35 students per academic year, including a maximum of 10 students educated outside Europe (EU), and a maximum of 6 students internal to SNS.

An official selection procedure is yearly managed by University of Pisa, with two distinct sections for extra-EU and EU candidates. Applications of extra-EU candidates are presently closed: a new call is expected around the beginning of 2026. For reference, the expired call for admission (academic year 2025/26) can be found here.

The call for admission of EU candidates is also expired, but, owing to available vacant positions, EU candidates can still submit their application according to the instructions mentioned here.

Selected candidates typically have a BSc in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics and related disciplines. Selection is carried out by an appointed Selection Committee via a two-step procedure:

  • the first step, based on the analysis of the curriculum vitae, the transcript of records, and other required documents, aims at verifying the minimal curricular requirements and defining the list of candidates admitted to the interview and their rank;
  • the second step, based on an interview, aims at verifying the personal preparation of the candidates, as well as their motivations and goals.
