The University of Pisa, founded in 1343, is among the leading research institutions in most international rankings.

  • According to the latest ARWU charts, the University as a whole is ranked in the 151-200 (51-75 in Physics) and 2-3 positions in the worldwide and National rankings, respectively.
  • According to the latest QS charts, the University as a whole is ranked 382nd worldwide, 143rd in Natural Sciences (including Physics, ranked 102nd), 243rd in Engineering and Technology.
  • Two University Departments involved in the MSc, Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione (DII) and Dipartimento di Fisica (FIS), have earned the award of Dipartimento di Eccellenza 2023-2027 issued by the Italian government.
  • Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS), another essential component for ensuring the high quality of the MSc, is a prestigious academic institution ranked by THE charts 154th as a whole, and 94th in Physical Sciences, at the international level.

Pisa offers to the students in Materials and Nanotechnology a highly stimulating playground to feed and grow their scientific and technical ambitions. All MSc lecturers are engaged in high level scientific researches, ensuring that lectures provide insights into challenging and up-to-date topics. Moreover, lecturers have direct access to state-of-the-art, in-house, facilities, available to students for both hands-on activities embedded in lecture programmes and Master Thesis internships.

Among others, facilities include:

  • those operated by the Center for Instrument Sharing at University of Pisa (CISUP), a unique Core Facilities platform offering access to a wide range of top-level instrumentation and involving most of the MSc lecturers;
  • the National Enterprise for nanoScience and nanoTechnology (NEST), an interdisciplinary research and training center for nanoscale investigations and the development of innovative tools in a variety of applicative fields, operated by a collaboration including SNS and Istituto Nanoscienze of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR-NANO).

Pisa is also the site of one of the largest research areas operated by the National Research Council (CNR) hosting many research institutes active in a variety of applicative fields. The MSc in Materials and Nanotechnology include lecturers affiliated with some of those institutes, in particular Istituto Processi Chimico Fisici (CNR-IPCF) and Istituto di Chimica dei Composti Organometallici (CNR-ICCOM), who also represent an added value to further complement the teaching offer of the MSc and the related possibilities in terms of research.
